What the ballast does

An ultraviolet sanitizer works by passing pool water past a UV lamp inside a quartz sleeve. The ballast is the electrical unit that starts that lamp and holds it at a steady output. Without it the lamp will not strike, and the system quietly passes water through with no ultraviolet treatment at all while everything else appears to be running.
