Product details

The SmartPool Pooleye PE23 is a pool safety alarm for inground and above ground pools. It watches the water for the signature of something entering it and sounds an alert, with a remote receiver so the warning carries indoors.

Subsurface, not surface

The unit works on subsurface wave detection. When something falls into the pool it pushes a wave below the surface, and that is what the alarm looks for. The reason this matters is everything it lets the unit ignore. Wind across the water, rain and floating toys all disturb the surface without producing the same subsurface signal, and an alarm that cannot tell the difference gets switched off within a week. It is rated to trigger on an object as light as 15 pounds.

Where it fits in

An alarm is a layer of protection, not the whole of it. Adult supervision and a physical barrier still do the primary work. What an alarm adds is coverage for the moments nobody planned for, which is exactly when pool accidents happen, and the remote receiver is what makes that useful, since an alert nobody hears is not an alert.

Install and test

Set it up as the instructions direct for your pool type, then test it deliberately and repeat that test through the season. A safety device is only worth what its last successful test says it is worth.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

How does it know something fell in?
It reads waves below the surface. An object entering the water pushes a subsurface wave that the unit detects, which is a different signal from surface ripple.
Will wind or a floating toy set it off?
It is designed to ignore surface level disruption such as wind, rain and floating toys, which is the point of using subsurface detection.
How small an object does it catch?
It is rated to alert on an object as light as 15 pounds entering the water.
Does the alarm sound indoors?
A remote receiver is included, so the alert carries away from the pool as well as at the unit itself.
