Product details

This is a U.S. Seal run capacitor rated at 30 MFD and 370 VAC, in a case measuring 1-3/4 in by 2-7/8 in. It is a replacement run capacitor for pool pump motors.

What a run capacitor does

A single phase motor cannot start turning on its own. The capacitor creates the phase shift that gets it moving, and a run capacitor stays in the circuit the whole time the motor is spinning, holding that shift and keeping the motor running efficiently. It is one of the most common failures on a pool pump, and one of the cheapest to fix.

Matching the part

Two numbers decide whether a capacitor is correct: the capacitance in microfarads and the voltage rating. The MFD value has to match what the motor was built for, since a different value changes how the motor behaves under load. The voltage rating can be equal to or higher than the original but never lower. Check the case dimensions too, because the capacitor has to sit in the can on top of the motor.

Safety first

A capacitor stores energy and can hold a charge long after the power is switched off. Turn off the breaker, then discharge the old capacitor safely before you disconnect it. If you are not comfortable doing that, this is a repair worth handing to a service technician.

How do I know this is the right capacitor?
Match two things to the label on your old capacitor or your motor: the microfarad value, here 30 MFD, and the voltage rating, here 370 VAC. The MFD value must match. A voltage rating equal to or higher than the original is acceptable, lower is not.
What is the part number?

Is this a start capacitor or a run capacitor?
