Product details

This is a run capacitor rated 50 MFD at 370 volts, supplied by U.S. Seal as part RD-50-370. The can measures 2" across by 3-3/4" tall.

Matching the part

A run capacitor is chosen by two numbers, the capacitance in MFD and the voltage rating, both of which are printed on the side of the old part. Both have to match, with the one exception that a higher voltage rating is acceptable and a lower one is not. The source also carries a set of substitute numbers used by other suppliers, including RD50370, 3190029, 17586350, 319-0029, 628318313 and 628318-313, which is useful when the number stamped on your failed capacitor is not the U.S. Seal one.

Before you start

Cut power at the breaker and discharge the capacitor before you touch the terminals. A capacitor holds a charge after the motor has stopped, which is the part of the job that catches people out. If the motor hums but will not spin, or starts slowly and runs hot, the capacitor is a common cause and a cheap thing to rule out.

How do I know this is the right capacitor?
Match both numbers printed on the old can: the capacitance in MFD and the voltage rating. This one is 50 MFD at 370 volts.
Can I use a 370V capacitor where a 440V one was fitted?
No. Fit a capacitor with the voltage rating the original carried or higher, never lower. The MFD value has to match.
What are the substitute part numbers for?
They are the equivalent numbers other suppliers use for the same capacitor, listed so you can confirm a match when the number on your old part is not RD-50-370.
Is it safe to swap myself?
Only with the power off at the breaker and the capacitor discharged first. A capacitor stores energy after the motor has stopped, and the terminals can still bite.
